Creating the Urban Environment
The Urban sector has a total area of more than 392,000 ft2 (36,418 m²) of pavement, 24 intersections, and 4 blocks of potential urban facades. The varied pavement materials and pavement markings within this sector accommodate the testing of vehicle cameras and machine vision systems, while the highly customizable site plan creates environments to meet the specific needs of individual engineering programs.
The 700 ft long (213.15 m), 12 ft wide (3.65 m) multi-lane stretch of roadway with intentionally damaged asphalt features 118 randomly spaced patches of varying length and height intended to replicate the wear and tear vehicles experience in real-world urban settings.
Patch length ranges from 1 ft (.30 m) to 8 ft long (2.40 m), and patch height relative to surrounding pavement ranges from -1.50 in. (-3.80 cm) to +0.50 in. (+1.25 cm). The urban environment is located in the west-central portion of the site and, depending on the specific testing parameters, can support up to 80 unique vehicles and 8 users simultaneously.
